Adult Sunday School Classes
The purpose of SSUMC's Christian Education ministry is to help all persons grow in their understanding and response to God's redeeming love as revealed in Christ. Through study of Christ's teachings, we strive to respond to God's grace and love by discerning and fulfilling our call to discipleship in this world.
Sandy Springs United Methodist Church has long been dedicated to the principle that Biblical study is a cornerstone of discipleship. Several Sunday school classes are in place to provide a learning environment for weekly Biblical study. In addition to school age level classes for children and youth, a variety of adult classes offers study, fellowship, and service projects for all ages and interests. These classes are offered from 9:45AM – 10:45AM each Sunday. A nursery is available for small children during the Sunday school hour.
DBS Upper level - Scout Hut
This class takes it name from its motto: Doing, Believing, Serving. We are a loving, caring, sharing family of light-hearted, mature adults who: DO God's bidding in the church and community; BELIEVE God's word as contained in the Holy Scripture; and SERVE others. (A class fund is maintained for benevolent purposes.)
Our teachers are a dedicated, devoted cadre of class members who, on a rotating basis, bring us dynamic, inspirational lessons utilizing the Adult International Bible series. Guest teachers are with us on special occasions. Oh yes, we socialize several times a year at outings, parties and retreats. MISS YOUR FAMILY? COME JOIN OURS!
JOY Fellowship Hall - Ground floor
The motto of this class is Jesus, Others, Yourself. This class of about 50 mature ladies and gentlemen are faithful to the church, to each other, and to varied mission projects. They gather each Sunday to enjoy fellowship and excellent lessons from a rotation of six different teachers.
Pacesetters Conference Room - First floor
This small but dedicated class is for our "super-seniors" - many of whom live in nearby independent living centers. Our church bus provides transportation and picks up members from Mount Vernon Towers, Hammond Glenn, and Campbellstone North. A rotation of church members from other classes serve as the teachers for this class.
Serendipity Activity Center Parlor
Open to spontaneity and desiring “a faculty of stumbling upon desirable discoveries” about the Christian life “in a casual manner,” couples and singles in this class, study and play together in a fellowship of caring. The class gathers for study on Sunday morning, first in the kitchen of the parlor of Hitson Activity Center for a light breakfast, followed by class discussion on contemporary themes and their impact on the church and society.
These lessons are always Biblically based with an emphasis on determining the will of God for your life in everyday situations. The teacher is Rev. Bruce Donnelly, a Methodist minister, who has worked with the poor and homeless in varied locations and is now on the staff of the Atlanta Food Bank. Social highlights include a Valentine’s Dinner and Christmas Party with a live auction that benefits mission projects determined by the class. The majority of our members are in their 50’s, but some are younger and some are older.
Stepping Stones Room 304 - Third floor
A class of young couples and singles from their 20’s to 40’s that explores the practical application of the Bible in our everyday lives. [Currently members of this class are meeting with "Tossed Salad" - see below. The Sunday school class is part of a larger young adult group known as Friendship Unlimited.
Tossed Salad Room 309 - Third Floor
Tossed Salad continues to grow. In the first part of 2011, we will begin a study that looks at religion and politics. Since a new congress will convene at that time, as Christians, we need to be informed as to what is going on in Washington. Then beginning in March, we will be using Easter from the Backside as our study through the Lenten season. Please check out our schedule and feel free to join us any Sunday in room 309 at 10:00 AM.
