Church History

In 1848, a group of sturdy pioneers chose a remote crossroads in northern Georgia to call their home. These new residents named the area “Sandy Springs” since many a weary traveler had found rest and refreshments from the clear, cool springs that bubbled up through the sand at this place.

Shortly after their arrival, these homesteaders established Sandy Springs United Methodist Church to provide a different kind of water for life’s travelers—Christ’s living water. They chose the high ground on which to build their church, one of the loftiest points of what is now Fulton County. The church was first an open arbor and then a small log structure, providing sanctuary, sustenance and community service.

At this busy crossroads, SSUMC’s founding leadership envisioned a church home where God’s word could be preached and where all people could discover the saving and sustaining grace of Christ. Grounded in Biblical faith and compassionate works, this church family embodies a missionary spirit that reaches out in tangible ways with a message of Christian hope and love.
