SERVE Sunday + Lunch and Learn

Our next SERVE Sunday will be on May 5 at 11 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Activities will include assembling goodie bags for ministry partners, bagging Backpack Buddy bags, and gardening.

A pizza lunch and learn will follow. As the church continues to revision and redevelop, we are kicking off a series of learnings from other churches. This will include conversations at SSUMC as well as field trips. The first session will be Revs. Anjie and Andi Woodworth as they share the story of a new United Methodist Congregation that resulted as a merger of two UMC churches. They will share about vision casting, best practices for radical hospitality, and worshipping in a temporary space. There will be time for Q and A. All welcome!

This is the primary legislative body for the United Methodist Church and the only group able to speak for the denomination as a whole. This General Conference is the postponed 2020 General Conference due to the pandemic.

Reach out to Pastor Kate at kfloyd@ssumc.org with questions and keep in prayer the entire North Georgia Delegation. Our own Amy King is on the delegation, as well as our Communications Coordinator, Jay Horton. We will have a debrief with them following worship on May 19. Make plans to join us!

Fresh Expressions Training

How do we "church" for people not in church? We create a "Fresh Expression" of church.

A Fresh Expression is a form of church for those not connected to any church. Fresh Expressions take shape outside of the walls of the church in places where our neighbors are already gathering, connecting churches with people who would never enter the church building on a Sunday morning.

Join us on Sunday, June 9 from 12:30-3 p.m. for a Fresh Expressions Training with Rev. Heather Jallad (FX specialist for the NGUMC). Lunch will be provided.

Explore Membership Coffee

Have you been considering joining SSUMC? Praying about how God is calling you to be involved in the life of our community? If you’re ready to take the next step and vow to be a part of this faith community with your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness, we’d love for you to join us on Easter Sunday.

In the early church, newcomers were baptized and welcomed into the church on Easter as a sign of new life and an embodied celebration of the resurrection. A group of people are joining on Easter, and you can be part of this sharing in the gift of new beginnings.

Talk to Kate or Emma about joining the church over coffee and snacks on Sunday, March 17 before worship at 10 a.m. in the Heritage room (down the hallway from the Sanctuary).

Ash Wednesday Worship

Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lent, is on Feb. 14. Worship will be at 6 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Lent is the church season before Easter when we spend six weeks journeying with Jesus toward the cross, and ultimately toward resurrection. It’s a time when followers of Jesus seek to let go of all the things that keep us from centering our lives in God. As we do so, we fill up with love, hope, and abundance, so that we are ready for new life on the other side. Join us this Lent as we work to "Let It Go!" and make room for God.

We will share in a service of Holy Communion, then extend Jesus' welcome outward as we pack food for Lake Forest Elementary School families, assemble care packages for SSUMC homebound members, and create valentines for them and teachers and staff at the school. Our friends from Solidarity Food Pantry will serve alongside us, we will offer a blessing for their impactful work, and then they will host us for a taco lunch. All are welcome!

Charge Conference

Each year, local United Methodist churches have a "charge conference" to elect leaders, hear from our District Superintendent, and review the year in ministry. For the fourth year, our charge conference will be online and joint with half the churches in our district (35 churches). The Church Council serves as the "Charge" and approves required paperwork. We are excited to share with you the slate of leaders for 2024 soon. All are welcome to attend this meeting on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. If you'd like the Zoom link, e-mail Jan Cook: jcook@ssumc.org
